Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

     As administrator of the Christian Church Health Care Benefit Trust and its Churchwide Health Care programs, I see every day the impact of our nation’s health care system on those we serve first hand. Equally important, I see the impact on the lives of people who are not fortunate enough to have health insurance.

     Our General Minister and President, Rev. Dr. Sharon E. Watkins, has written a pastoral letter asking every citizen to get involved in the great debate over health care. I have asked that her letter be posted on our website because I agree that the time is now that changes in health care availability must be enacted.

     There is a great deal of misinformation circulating in news media. Politicians and special interest groups are using intentional scare tactics to manipulate public opinion. I believe the time is now that we must demand all who are engaged in this great debate to put polemics aside and begin to work together for a comprehensive solution.

There are two great questions to be resolved. And while they are interrelated, we would be helped if we could resolve one before addressing the other. The two questions? Who should have access to quality health care? And how are we to pay for it? These are very simple questions for a very complex system.

     I join our General Minister and President in inviting you to get involved right now. Contact your Representative and Senators about health care reform and ask that they work in bipartisan effort to pass legislation that will resolve these two broad questions for all of our people.

     Together we can make a difference. We can empower change and help those who have been left without affordable health care.
